Thursday 19th July – Avebury to Pewsey

OS Explorer Map 157

From Avebury, the first section is 2 miles to a car park on the A4361 at Knoll Down. From here, it’s 2 miles along the ‘Old Bath Road’ (now a path) to the White Horse at Cherhill.

We then follow the White Horse Trail for 3 miles to meet the Wansdyke shortly before it crosses the A361.We continue along the Wansdyke for 2.5 miles to the ridge above All Cannings where we take a 2 mile detour down into All Cannings and the Kings Arms for lunch. Total distance this morning is 11.5 miles.

After lunch, we go back up to the ridge at Tan Hill where there used to be a White Horse hill figure but this is now no longer visible. Another two miles takes us to the existing White Horse above Alton Barnes.

We then have choices for the route into Pewsey:

  • 2 miles down into Honeystreet then along the canal path for about 5 miles into Pewsey.
  • 2.5 miles down the Workway Drove (Track) and a road to Wilcot then along the canal path for another two miles into Pewsey.
  • A 7 miles walk follows the Tan Hill Way along the top of the ridge to Oare Hill then down into Pewsey. This avoids any duplication of the route on Friday.

In the evening, there will be a session at The Crown.
