This page provides an outline of the walks that took place on the 6/7/8th June 2015.
All walkers are responsible for their own safety and for arranging transport both to the start of the walk and from the end. Please talk with other walkers to arrange this. If you need help then do email info@jj-rr.org and we will help if we can.
Saturday
Meet at the Red Lion pub in Avebury to leave at 1.30. If you want to eat there first, please arrive in good time as the pub is likely to be busy.
See this map for the paths that we will walk.
We will walk from the pub, around the stone circle and then up and along the Wessex Ridgeway, past the Sarson Stones and down into Marlborough, a distance of around 6 miles which should take around 3 hours at a leisurely pace. JJ says “This first half day should be relaxed and rooted in the history of the landscape.“
Sunday
This is a long morning walk, a pub stop for lunch and a shorter afternoon walk.
See this map for the paths that we will walk from the start to crossing the M4.
Meet at 9am outside the Town Hall. We then follow pavements along the roads to get out of Marlborough. We then follow a small road up to Woodlands Farm on the edge of Poulton Downs. We then pick up a path going north along the side of Round Hill Downs until we meet the Ridgeway Path and cross over the M4 motorway.
See this map for the paths for the second part of the morning walk.
We then follow the Ridgeway until we drop down into Bishopstone for lunch at the Royal Oak pub. The morning walk is around 12 miles and we aim to be at the pub by 1pm.
See this map for the Ridgeway path from Bishopstone to the White Horse.
Around 2pm we will leave the pub to walk back up to the Ridgeway and then walk east to the White Horse at Uffington. We pass Wayland Smithy and the Long Barrow with time for a short detour to visit these historic places. This walk is around 6 miles and we aim to arrive the White Horse by 4.30 to take lifts down into Wantage. There will be a session at the Shoulder of Mutton pub. This is a small pub and tickets for this session are sold out.
Monday
This is a whole day walk with a stop along the path for lunch. Please bring your own lunch.
We will meet at 9.30 at the car park at Sparsholt Firs then walk east along the Ridgeway Path.
We plan to stop for lunch at the car park on Bury Down. This section is just over 9 miles.
After lunch we will walk under the A34 and on for just over 6 miles to a car park where the path meets the road some 2 miles before Streatley. It is then some 2.5 miles into Streatley and over the bridge to the Thames at Goring. The last two miles into Streatley is along roads.
The whole walk along the Ridgeway, from Sparsholt Firs to Streatley/Goring, is around 18.5 miles.
Pingback: Details of the walks in June | John Jones and the Reluctant Ramblers
Hallo John
Looking forward to this weekend of walks and to seeing you and hearing you in the Reluctant Ramblers. I’ve got a ticket for the Saturday night. Is it OK to bring my dog please, on the lead? Hope you are recovering well. I’m pleased that your last session of gigs went well and that you enjoyed the tour. I am in Wales on the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path in glorious weather. Looking forward also to seeing you in Sandwich in July. Are there likely to be any more gigs in England or Wales this year?
Love and best wishes
Lorna
